PHYSICAL + EMOTIONAL SAFETY
AN INTERVIEW WITH: Julian Marc Opena, MS, LMFT, I-O
Interview
What do you prioritize as Program Director?
I come from a summer camp background, so I am used to play and fun, but also really emotional experiences. I think that most people think of my role and they’re like, oh, these are rules and logistics and all these policies and procedures, but no, it’s really a careful clinical curation of physical and emotional safety, and I think that when we can distribute that amongst the milieu, they will better be able to engage in the therapeutic work that they’re doing with their individual therapists, right? If they have a community that supports them and loves them and fosters a secure base that will heighten the efficacy of the way that they’re able to do the rest of their treatment. But if they don’t feel connected, if they don’t feel that sense of belonging, no matter what interventions you throw their way, they will fall short unless that client has a sense of belonging. That’s ultimately what I feel like my job is as a Program Director, is to make sure that all these clients feel connected, that you belong, doesn’t matter what you’ve done, where you’ve been, you are safe here, you are okay here, and let us offer you the safety that you need to heal.
